KULA (HawaiiNewsNow) – Police are investigating after Maui hunters discovered human remains wrapped in plastic in a remote area of Kula on Wednesday, authorities have confirmed to HNN.
Wailuku patrol officers responded around 4:30 p.m. to a property off Keanuhea Street near the Waiohuli Hawaiian Homestead region. About 30 minutes later, detectives and crime scene technicians arrived.
Authorities say the crime scene is an approximately 30-minute drive into the woods.
Gerald Ponce lives across the street and was shocked to see the huge police response.
“Seen all the policeman passing me and there’s a guy in front of the gate in front of my house and they all turned around and went to him. Before you know it, police, fire and ambulance, everyone was here,” he said.
Kimberli Kaanana, a Waiohuli Hawaiian Homestead resident, said the discovery in the rural community is chilling. “After hearing that the body was actually wrapped in plastic is a scary thing because not too many people know about this area unless you live around here,” she said.
Waiohuli Hawaiian Homestead resident Tina Keliikupakako-Kauhola added she was “blown away” by the news.
“I almost didn’t believe it. Like no, that can’t be true,” she said.
Detectives are still piecing together the investigation.
They will be conducting an autopsy to try to find out who it is and what happened.
