HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – Two singers from Hawaii turned chairs during the blind auditions of NBC’s “The Voice” on Tuesday night.
One of them got all four judges to turn their chairs.
Kaylee Shimizu, from Ewa Beach, got a standing ovation after singing the Beatles hit “Golden Slumbers” — in honor of her late great-grandfather, who was her biggest fan.
The coaches were shocked to learn Shimizu is just 17 years old.
“I grew up singing karoke, Filipino family,” she said. “I’ve been singing my whole life.”
Just moments after she began singing, John Legend, Reba McEntire and Niall Horan all pushed their buttons, with Gwen Stefani shortly behind them.
Shimizu’s family joined her on stage as the judges made their pitches. In the end Kaylee decided to join Legend’s team.
“Your voice was just dazzling, it was so creative, it was so musical,” Legend said.
Meanwhile, Jason Arcilla, of Maui, secured a spot on Team Gwen after stunning judges with his rendition of Fleetwood Mac’s “Dreams” — but not without a fight.
Stefani was the first to turn her chair and nabbed the 34-year-old immediately, blocking fellow coach Reba McEntire.
“The more that I listened the more I was like, oh my God, this guy is unique sounding and it was so soothing and beautiful. I was like, I’m going to press my button,” Stefani said, after Arcilla’s performance.
Fellow coach Horan called Stefani “mean” after her move.
Despite that, McEntire had a lot of positive feedback for Arcilla.
“There’s a lot of things that I look for in a song choice, but it’s got to touch my heart if I want to record it or sing it,” McEntire said. “That’s what you did today — touch my heart.”
Arcilla, a single dad from Pukalani, regularly performs gigs at resorts, private events, weddings and more with his band Jason Arcilla & the Rhythm Sons.
Watch Arcilla’s and Shimizu’s journeys on Monday and Tuesday nights on “The Voice” on KHNL.
